The Mismeasure of Man: Why Popular Ideas about Human-Chimp Comparisons Are Misleading or Wrong

You have probably heard that our DNA, the stuff that makes us human, is only 1% different from chimps. Read More ›

Darwinian Logic: The Latest on Chimp and Human DNA

Picture an Ouroboros, the alchemical symbol of a snake with its own tail in its mouth. Do you get the feeling that Darwinian "logic" is taking us nowhere? Read More ›

Fact-Checking Wikipedia on Common Descent: The Evidence from Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry

It is important, in evaluating these arguments, that one consider all the evidence: not just the evidence that is consistent. It seems to me that when this is done, the arguments for common descent -- certainly in its universal sense -- are, at best, inconclusive. Read More ›

Critically Analyzing the Argument from Human/Chimpanzee Genetic Similarity

The problem of making premature claims that we don't know are correct plagues Dennis Venema's discussion of human and chimp genetic variation. Read More ›

Human/Ape Common Ancestry: Following the Evidence

Although common ancestry of apes and humans is compatible with intelligent design, the actual scientific evidence for the thesis is a lot more dicey than many people think. Read More ›

Recent Genetic Research Shows Chimps More Distant From Humans, Neanderthals Closer

Research published in Nature over the past few months is showing a much greater genetic distance between humans and chimps than previously thought, while revealing a closer one between humans and Neanderthals. A Nature paper from January, 2010 titled, “Chimpanzee and human Y chromosomes are remarkably divergent in structure and gene content,” found that Y chromosomes in humans and chimps “differ radically in sequence structure and gene content,” showing “extraordinary divergence” where “wholesale renovation is the paramount theme.” Of course, the paper attributes these dramatic genetic changes to “rapid evolution during the past 6 million years.” One of the scientists behind the study was quoted in a Nature news article stating, “It looks like there’s been a dramatic renovation or reinvention Read More ›

Guy Walks Into a Bar and Thinks He’s a Chimpanzee: The Unbearable Lightness of Chimp-Human Genome Similarity

I am often struck by how the topic of evolution in general, and chimp/human ancestry in particular, can be an immediate conversation opener that just as quickly becomes a conversation closer. Read More ›

Darwin’s Failed Predictions, Slide 10: “The myth of 1% human-chimp genetic differences” (from JudgingPBS.com)

PBS asserts that "a schoolchild can cite the figure perhaps most often called forth in support of human/chimp common ancestry — namely, that we share almost 99 percent of our DNA with our closest living relative, the chimpanzee." Such an argument raises two questions. Read More ›
